It feels sad that in todays time and in so called educated class we still make our daughters feel inferior about themselves when it comes to explaining them about menstruation.
I was saddened when one day my lil girl asked me, "Mom why we are impure during periods", I was taken aback because, firstly she has not got periods as yet and what I have explained to her about it, Is not what she was asking from me.I sat with her and tried to understand the source of this sick information and to my utter displeasure it comes from her friend and who in turn has been fed this information by her parents.
why cant we educate our girls to understand this physiological change in more scientific way. Why do we have to attach taboo to this physiological change and make it look abnormal. Why do we tell them that talking about Sanitary napkin in front of people is shame. Do we tell our boys that talking about shaving is Sin or shameful, that is also a physiological change. Why do we tell them that its big sin to pray to God when they are going through menstrual cycle. Rather we should educate them about the changes and implication of menstruation cycle in positive manner so that our lil girls feel good about this transition.
We in todays time should shun away from the age old tradition of not praying, not going to temple during periods .It might have been necessary during those times as hygiene and sanitary facilities were not so good. But it does not hold true in todays time.
Our girls are Angels, don't make them feel small by attaching taboo to the most important transition of their life.
